Their purpose is to recover objects of unknown origin particularly those that are of non-Earthly origin. They obtain field intelligence information and they passed it on to those who are the "keepers of this information."

Operation Blue Fly is a program to recover objects of unknown origins that fell to Earth. In 1957 it was expanded to recover debre all unknown origin. This program became Operation Moon Dust. He talks about how the US Government keep secrets. Stone explains how US society stops itself from getting information on UFOs and Alien activity.
Speaking from experience, meeting aliens is an emotional experience. Once this happens to an individual, this is something that they will never forget. People who wake up thinking that humans are the only people in the universe then go to bed finding out that the universe has plenty of other people more technically advanced than you are can twist your mind.
